FLOOR SANDING IN TUGGERANONG: HOW OLD PINE FLOORBOARDS ARE TRANSFORMED INTO NEW, BEAUTIFUL TIMBER FLOOR
Finding original pine floorboards under some old carpet can feel like winning the jackpot, particularly if you are wanting to put a real stamp on your home with a lot of character and value. In one of our most recent projects in Tuggeranong, we helped a homeowner restore tired old pine floors by sanding & polishing them. In this guide, we will step through exactly how we restored the boards, and how you can do this as well with your own timber floors.

Why Restore Your Pine Floorboards
Pine timber floorboards represent a hallmark feature in many Canberra homes generally and Tuggeranong in particular. Although pine timber lacks the hardness of timber like Tasmanian Oak or Blackbutt, it does have a genuine antique charm associated with it including; warmth in the tones used, intricate patterning of the grain, and simply the more rustic feel of the timber suited to an older style or coastal style home.

Benefits of Rejuvenating Pine Floors:
- – Least expensive timber that is very easily obtained
- – Natural warm golden natural colour that gets richer with age
- – Has years of wear removed with sanding and refines the grain.
Floor Sanding in Tuggeranong: Step-by-Step Pine Floor Restoration
Our latest demolition job in Tuggeranong involves a house where a carpet had been laid over the pine boards for years. We were quite impressed that after years of service, the timber underneath was still intact and refinishing was very much viable, here’s how we went about sanding.
All Set Up We started by removing the carpet, underlay and staples, exposing the floorboards. We checked for protruding nails, cupping, water marks, and gaps. All nails were punched below the surface and any small holes were filled with wood filler.
Sanding Process
Coarse Sand (40 Grit): Old finish, surface stains, and minor damage had flat out gone.
Mid Sand (60 Grit): The deep sanding lines were smoothed out and leveled.
Fine Sand (80-100 Grit): Made ready for the coating, a smooth sanded surface.
Once we finished sanding, we were able to vacuum and ready to seal the flooring.

How to Care for Your Newly Sanded Pine Floors
Pine is a softer timber, therefore, a little extra care will allow your finished floors to remain stunning for many years to come.
- – Cleaning Vacuum or sweep daily using a soft bristle vacuum head.
- – Use pH-neutral timber floor cleaning products. Never wet mop timber floors; damp mop only.
- – Avoid using soft cleansers and detergents altogether.
- – Protection Use rugs or mats at entry ways to help trap dirt.
- Add felt pads to the bottom of all your furniture. Do not drag any objects on the timber floors.
