A transformative Striking Ironbark timber floor in Canberra
We recently had the pleasure of restoring an Ironbark timber floor for a beautiful home in Canberra, Australia. In addition to being incredibly dense and a rich reddish-brown, Ironbark timber is the substance of choice for a space that is both bold and sophisticated. But after years of traffic, even this unbelievably durable hardwood needed the help of a professional to restore its natural beauty, so we were called in. Because it is an interior project, our client’s goal was to leave the finished floor with a modern, ultra-matt finish, but still highly durable.
After we presented several options, the client settled on a complete professional sand and polish to a finish of Berger Seidle 2K with Ceramic Component in Extra Matt — one of the most advanced floor finishes available on the market today!
Why Ironbark timber is a premium timber
Ironbark timber is one of the most durable native hardwoods available in Australia. It is well respected for the following;
– Longevity and hardness
– Deep grain character
– Naturally resistant to termites and decay
These natural properties ensure that Ironbark timber is a wise and long-lasting investment for residential and commercial floors—especially when applying a similarly durable finish like the Berger Seidle 2K.
The Brief: Low Sheen, High Durability
The customer requested a finish that would show off the natural tone and character of the Ironbark without the reflective gloss of conventional coatings. They also wanted a hard-wearing surface that could sustain everyday life without constant maintenance.
We suggested Berger Seidle 2K with Ceramic Component – Extra Matt. The product is a two-component, water-based polyurethane finish with ceramic particles that enhances the surface protection. Result? A floor that looks raw and natural, but built to last.
Project Process: Sanding and Finishing Ironbark Timber
Step 1: Site Inspection
We began with a comprehensive inspection of the project. We tested moisture levels to determine if the timber was ready to be finished. The existing coating was heavily worn, exhibited uneven sheen and had numerous scratches.

Step 2: Sanding to the Perfect Level
Our sanding process included several grits to remove the old coating and level the floor. We paid specific attention to grain direction and edge blending to level out the floor and prevent having hard edges or ‘flap marks’ at the edge of the coating.

Step 3: Fine Abrasion & Dust Control
After level and smoothing out the surface, we completed a fine abrasion using a multi-disc sander to ensure ultra-smoothness. During the total process we used dust containment systems to ensure a clean work area and clean environment.
Step 4: Applying Berger Seidle 2K Ceramic Extra Matt
Once the prep work was done, we applied multiple coats of Berger Seidle 2K Extra Matt – a finish that uses ceramic technology for amazing durability and scratch resistance. The extra matt sheen helped bring out the depth of the timber without sacrificing its raw; modern look.
We applied each coat carefully, making sure to give plenty of time for curing in between each coat. We wanted to build a finish that would last and resist foot traffic.
Step 5: Final Buff & Detail
After it cured, we lightly buffed the floors and checked the floor for uniformity. The final result was a floor that felt as good as it looked – silky smooth underfoot.

Why We Use Berger Seidle 2K Ceramic Extra Matt
When it comes to timber flooring, the finish can make it or break it. Berger Seidle 2K Extra Matt provides:
Superior surface hardness due to ceramic reinforcement

It’s an exceptional finish for the homeowner that loves raw timber and also requires the best performance.
The End Result
This Ironbark floor looks incredible. This extra matte finish allows the natural hues and grain of the timber to shine, while also ensuring the ceramic ensures the floor remains very resistant to day-to-day uses.
