Remove Carpet and Refinish Pine Floors

In our most recent residential flooring project we carried out, the client was keen to freshen up their tired and outdated carpeted floors, we lifted the carpet and found solid pine floorboards – an unexpected find with great potential.

Through careful sanding, polishing and applying Berger-Seidle 2K Ceramic Matt Finish – ultra-durable – we were able to change the whole look and feel of the home – a modern, natural look with lasting durability.

Why did we Refurbish the Pine Floors instead of Replacing?

Many Canberra homes, particularly older ones house original timber floors laced in character hidden under carpet. In this case, the Holder pine floors were structurally sound and filled with character, making it a clear choice.

Process: Removing Carpet and Finding Floorboards

We began with removing the carpet from the living area and hall. We discovered solid pine floorboards underneath in great condition (aside from many decades of dirt, scraps of carpet and other adhesive, and very minor surface defects).

  • What steps we followed:
  • Carefully pulled carpet and underlay to avoid damage to the boards.
  • Removed staples / tack strips with pliers and floor scrapers.

Fully cleaned the surface to assess which condition the floor was in.

The floorboards were not damaged, only scuffed and uneven surfaces created by decades of wear and aging; we corrected this surface with professional sanding.

Berger-Seidle 2K Ceramic Matt Finish: Why We Used It

We decided to use Berger-Seidle 2K Ceramic Matt Finish for this project because it is one of the most sophisticated floor coating systems available, and as such one of the most durable coatings, too. If you have kids and pets in your home, this finish can withstand high traffic while giving your floors a natural look, thanks to the ultra-matte look and sheen.

Here is why we took this finish process seriously:

Ultra-matte sheen = shows natural subtleties in pine tones
2K Ceramic = superior bonding and durable
Eco-conscious VOC compliant
Fast drying and strong finish after just a few coats
We put three coats on, with very light buffing between coats and time to cure and perfectly bond.

The End Result: A Brighter, More Naturally Living Space

Once the finish cured the results were impressive. The golden warmth of the pine boards came to life with the soft, matte appearance of the ceramic coating. The home feels more spacious, clean, and timeless.

The homeowners were excited…not just about the aesthetic upgrade but also about the durability, and minimal maintenance of the new finish.
